If I knew 2 years before the fall what would I do?....

Well lucky us! We don't know if its 2 years or 200 years but we do know that we have not fallen yet.

Ferfal pointed out his top things and he has hindsight we should listen:
1. Food!
2. Truck 4x4
3. Fuel
4. Generator
5. TV, DVD, and other home entertainment
6. Books
7. Guns and Ammo

And on Survivalblog.com James H. pointed out just from the tornado's in Mississippi this weekend...
1. No one is getting into town right after a disaster
2. Have a big chainsaw and make sure there are no trees in your yard
3. Have a four-wheeler and a 15 foot trailer to haul out pieces of debris from your home/yard
4. Have a siphon and a generator
5. Know how to turn off your gas in your home because live wires and natural gas don't mix
6. Know beforehand that the authorities are not there to help you but to maintain order and the power company is not going to cut down that tree that is now in your dining room.
Brick homes fare better than stick ones
7. Anticipate that neighbors are going to freak out and run around like chickens with their heads cut off and try to do silly things like get in their cars and drive over debris in the road and get stuck and pop their tires.
8. Have gloves and chains in your truck and keep a full tank of gas at all times. Some people ran out of gas in the traffic.
9. Realize that tensions are going to be high and seeing weird things like one group of people having a barbecue and getting drunk and across the street one family was sitting on the lawn waiting for help is a recipe for a bad situation. I saw a kid in the road trying to flag us down and there were some guys leaning up against a house a bit out of sight. We just drove around him. I couldn't believe that it was already getting strange and the tornado was only a few hours earlier.

Let me take Ferfals list and see how well I score:
Ferfal pointed out his top things and he has hindsight we should listen:
1. Food!
Our family has some but there is still room for more.
2. Truck 4x4
I score 100% on this and I own the title.
3. Fuel
This is the first time I have thought about this. It is also a good economic choice. I could take the gas trailer to the station when prices are lower if that ever happens again.
4. Generator
Once again I have several generators but I do need a 3 fuel generator.
5. TV, DVD, and other home entertainment
We have lots of entertainment.
6. Books
We have many books
7. Guns and Ammo
Never enough I am still missing some vital components in this area. It seems like security is the biggest issue in Argentina right now. This area will have to be improved.

Some other items that Ferfal pointed out were: LED Headlamps (I have always thought these were dorky but I have seen the light!), Solar-Dynamo power generator, rechargeable batteries, Camp stove multi fuel, Extra OTC medicine (I am always running out of this stuff on a regular basis anyhow.)

Working out, Organization

Well so far so good on working out. The boys and I did an hour of brisk walking yesterday.

I found a funny photo on Tamra's site. I thought it was appropriate since we had a bunch of pro 2nd amendment rallies yesterday.

Somehow our 2.1 trillion 2009 tax revenues seem very unlikely to be able to ever pay off our 56 trillion in debt. I'm not sure what the interest in on 56 trillion of debt is but its a lot.

A whole weekend of fail...

This weekend the boys and I worked out. that was good and I am still sore from doing it, also good.

I tried to organize a good two hour walk for us on Sunday but, the rainy weather killed that. I am still to much of a wimp to do a foul weather hike. Perhaps some other day. This has caused me to work on getting the boys good foul weather gear. But since the dog had to have surgery we will be short on extra money for a while. We also were going to try to survive on our storage food for a couple weeks to save some money but we have totally failed on that all weekend. I will try harder the rest of the week.

My little girl is moving out to her own place. This makes me worry about her security. I have decided to get her some training. I will try and get her to the range to work on her safety and target skills. But I think I am going to take the whole crew out to the Appleseed shoot next time one is close. Women get to go free. I will have to get everyone a "Liberty Training Rifle". I think the best plan will be to take the girls on one and the boys on another.

I also found these awesome bee hive plans on JWR's Site.

Ferfal Circle 5

http://ferfal.blogspot.com/2010/04/five-circles-of-preparedness.html

5)The 5th circle reaches your house, the place where you live. This may not be available to you in a worse case scenario but you do spend a good amount of time there and there’s a good chance you may be able to get there unless forced out because of some reason such as fire, flood, town evacuation, etc.

Obviously you can not have everything you need in your house but we would be fine for well over 1 to 3 months without leaving with the 4 or 5 of us, baring water, but we do have the means to store a vast amount and ways of collecting it. We have some filters.

Ferfal Circle 4

http://ferfal.blogspot.com/2010/04/five-circles-of-preparedness.html

4)The 4th circle expands some more and now includes the gear you keep in your car, your office or some other cache. This falls into the “I’ll get to it IF I’m luck” but its always a good idea to have this gear, specially in the car that usually stays pretty close to you. Here you may keep extra food, water and spare set of clothes per family member, maybe a better weapon and more ammo and a bigger emergency kit.

I have some gear in my car and plenty in my home. Need to work on clothing in the car. One set of cold weather gear would be nice. Always working on my weapons collection. More due to liking weapons than the thought that we would need them, but it never hurts. I need to organize my home emergency kit.

Quad Rail, foregrip and laser...

My friend from TX breaking at least one rule of gun safety but he does look pretty cool.
I added a quad rail and foregrip (that I had to move very far forward to allow a magazine to be seated) And an inexpensive laser.

Reloading skills

Due to the recent acquisition of the boss' Valentine's present, and me being a big cheap bastard, not wanting to pay premium prices for rounds. I contacted my old roommate who has done reloading and he was more than happy to tell me all about how to find out all about it.

He suggested Dillon Precision so I am digging into the website and trying to find out all I can about reloading. The tools are expensive but that is offset by the money saved by re-loading.

So I will try and learn a new skill and try re-loading.

Happy Valentine's Day

A couple of the things we got at the Nations Gun Show this weekend for Valentine's day. I really appreciate having a partner who understands prepping. She asked for an AK for Valentine's Day.

Now to clean up the AK and take both of them to the range.

Paracord

I have decided in order to build some skills I will learn to make paracord accessories.
I really wanted a paracord belt so instead of buying one. I will make one. I will post photos of my trials as I try and learn this skill.

I also order along with the paracord a new MOLLE bag that I will use for cold weather gear, and a new glock 17 magazine.

Stuff

Yesterday I received Ferfs tac pants, and my tac pants, but Wogs were not shipped. I guess they did not have them. I will try again next month.

I also got the second half of my ammo allotment.
20 .308
500 .22
50 9mm +P+
50 .380 Frangible

Mary and I started our diets yesterday. Neutrasystem. They send us a months worth of food (kind of neat sort of like prepping but with a regular rotation.) So far the food is odd and not overly good. But I probably have to much good food in my life and that is why I am a small round ball.

More weekend Prep

50 lb bag -o- rice
Big ol thing of coffee.

The AK for my wife will have to wait for the next paycheck.
We talked about saving more money. We don't think saving money is wise.
I have a co-worker at work who I believe is a preper. He is also a serious investor.
He has spent his whole life attaining wealth. He took all is wealth and dropped it into his home and a single condo. As he put it "A lifetime of equity". It vaporized over the last year. His home is now worth less than the equity he put into it.

Our family will continue to buy food, ammunition and other supplies. They seem more valuable than most investments. We also continue to pay down debit. Taxes are always something we fight with, and now they are going up.

I received about half my order of ammo, all of the shotgun and only the 7.62 AK rounds. The second part should be here soon. My first allotment of .410 rounds. I still have failed to find any 45 Long colt round.

The plan continues to be AK this month, and next month at the gun show Feb 13th I will get my AR-10

Prepping continues.

Bullets...

Got my order of ammo last night.

I thought I had ordered 5 boxes of OO buck but checking back it was only a single box.
Oh well that is how it goes if you are not carefull.

The wife unit does wonder why I order ammo for weapons we do not have. My answer is always "Yet" and she smirks.

I do have a plan to get the .22 cal weapons this month so I can take the girls to the range and not intimidate them.

Tonight is suppose to be a scary snow storm so when I get home from work the boy and I will pick up some fuel, water and a couple other good to have things.

I should make a list so I dont forget.

Bad Viscount

Well it has been almost a month since I blogged.

Mostly due to Christmas. Instead of getting sweet prep items I am getting cool kid items.

But.... as of yesterday I own my truck and the bank does not.
And the BoA CC is chopped up and gone forever!

I also this morning got some ammo but not the whole allotment for the month.

525 .22
20 308
20 .12ga 00

Concealed weapons permit

Looking into my CCW, I could do it all myself and it would cost me a tiny bit less than going though my local shooting range. Seems like more of a pita then just paying a bit more for the classes at the shooting range, not to mention a refresher course on safety and shooting is never a bad thing.

Looks like only about $25 more for the effort and that is nothing since they take care of much of the paperwork. I will have to get off my butt and get to training. The dates for the classes are Dec 17th and Dec 20th.

Not much else going on this week as far as prepping, I missed the gun show. So now I have made sure I have checked the schedule at the expo center and it looks like they have it every 3 to 4 months but not exactly on the quarters. Last time my son and I went a couple months ago, they had all the items I needed (although the .380 apc ammo sold out before I got back to the table to buy it).

I have one of the best wives in the world, she is totally on board with prepping and encourages it. She is working hard on paying down debt and putting aside enough money to buy beans bullets and blankets. My middle son is always excited about it we call it the Zombie Apocalypse since it is a bit more fun than TEOTWAWKI or WTSHTF. And we both enjoy Zombie Appoc movies somewhat, I tend to like the funny ones much better than the ones with lots of gore.

My oldest sister is on board with prepping and my other sister already has a spot in WA state (yes I am so jealous). And they are doing very well already living the preppers life style. My mother does what she can. My biggest issue is the great distances between all of us. Sister one and Mom live in AZ while sister two lives in WA and I live in VA, I am hoping not for much longer.

But one thing at a time. I have completed my food lists and we should have a good start in less than a year. Now my wife wants to put together an "exit" plan to get the land ready and start working on that. So off to planning land again.

Ammo

Cheaper than Dirt .com is awesome.
I received my ammo so now I am one month closer to my 5 year supply of ammo.

My wife did ask me if we had guns for all the types of ammo I got.
I had to tell her not yet. But instead of being made to feel foolish she had me explain what gun on the list each round was matched to and what the purpose of that gun was and why it was on the list. She seemed much more interested than I would have expected.

.12 ga - Shotgun (best gun for everything defence, hunting)
.308 - AR-10 (Hunting, Battle Rifle)
7.62x39 - AK-47 (Assault Rifle)
9mm - Glock 19 (Compact Handgun)
.22 LR - 10/22 (Varmint Gun)

Glock 19 now has a home

Well my order from topglock.com arrived quickly and accurately
I ordered the paddle holsters Fobus holster and matching double mag pouch.

They work very nicely and I am happy with them. I can not wait to try them at the range.

Monday, November 16, 2009

Good weekend...

Tried to get the DPMS .308 Sportical but it was not available.
So instead,

New Glock 19
Also should get the holster and mag pouches.

Weird experience at the gun store, my NICS check came back on delay but they OK'd me so it was all ok, I suspect they typed my name or something wrong.

Was able to do a safety class with JB and Paul, JB thinks the shotgun is very heavy.
We also ordered the first of 10 sets of ammo. So 9 more to go

Ammo:
15 00 Buck .12ga
5 Slugs .12ga
5 #1 Buck .12ga
50 #6 Shot .12ga
20 .308
50 .22LR
20 7.62 X 39
50 9mm

Picked up wrenches, vice grips Alan wrench's and files, most of the tools for the basic tool list and all the tools for the power tool list.
Finally picked up a couple of ponchos, nothing great but pretty good ones.
A pair of binoculars nothing special but I really needed them at the protest the other day and did not have a pair, now I do.

So all in all a pretty good weekend. And much progress on the prep work.
Had to spend $700 for the dogs (not so good for for prep)

Need to concentrate on long guns. I have found a couple places that sell the DPMS .308, but I think the next gun will be Marys AK-47.

Weirdness

Last night my practically perfect wife told me she wanted a power point of goals, including points of gear such as guns so we can move forward more quickly on our prep plans. So we are definitely on the same page and that will help a lot.
